This Kind Man Helps Stray Dogs In Mexico City
Edgardo Perros is a man on a mission to help stray dogs in Mexico City. For the past six years, he has walked over 14,000 km around the perimeter of Mexico, pushing a trolley full of dog food and medicine, to save injured and sick dogs. He has successfully rescued and homed close to 500 dogs along the way.
Edgardo’s love for dogs started when he realized the pain and suffering they go through living homeless on the roads. He saw their pain and decided to do something about it. He said, “No one helps dogs living homeless on the roads. This is where I saw their pain.”
Edgardo’s humility and compassion for all beings are striking. When he finds a dog that is too injured to be saved, he lies down with it on the road so it has company as it passes on. “Usually, I just keep them company until, in a natural way, they rest,” he said.
Edgardo has three dogs of his own that have been by his side from the beginning of his journey. Patuleco was born with “swimmers syndrome” and has dysplasia, which means he doesn’t have knees. He’s been on the road with Edgardo for three years. A three-legged master Sin Pata has been traveling for a year now and is waiting to be adopted. A beautiful China Pong is looking for a permanent home and has been on the road with him for almost three years. Kiwi was found with a severe skin condition but is now well and looking for a forever home. Little Enzo is now healing in a clinic after leg amputation due to bone infection. After that, he will join the journey and learn how to walk from Sensei Sin Pata.
Edgardo’s mission is to awaken people’s consciousness about stray dogs and their suffering. He believes that it is the fault of dog owners that they live on the streets, and the person doing it hurts him more than the battered and injured dogs. His best friends are his dogs, and he loves and protects them. He receives nothing but happiness and self-satisfaction from his mission.
Edgardo has only 1,432 km left to travel to reach his goal. He said, “I can’t live the rest of my life just saying ‘I traveled once around Mexico and helped dogs.’ I want to continue to work with dogs.” Edgardo’s kind heart and selfless dedication to helping stray dogs have touched the hearts of many, including mine. He is truly a hero for the animals.
